Old Farmhouse Bakery top of the list!
Aug 15, 2011
During September the BBC Good Food Magazine is celebrating 10 years of British Food Fortnight championing the best of British. Clare Hargreaves - their Seasonal & Local Writer - recommends some of her favourite artisan products. She lists one main choice (plus two more to try) under the following headings: Beef, Bread & Flour, Rapeseed Oil, Cheese, Smoked Salmon, Ice-Cream, English Bubbly, Chocolate, Apple Juice, Sausages. The Old Farmhouse Bakery is her main choice under Bread & Flour and she says the following:
The Old Farmhouse Bakery. The big problem with a visit to the Bitmead family's bakery, in Steventon, Oxfordshire, is what not to choose. Breads range from rye sourdough and crusty cottage loaves to fresh onion and cheddar cheese plaits. And then there's the best-selling lardy cake. The bakery, a converted shire horse cart shed, uses the village's original 1939 bread oven and baking tins. Kate Bitmead is scrupulous about sourcing top-quality flours and other ingredients as locally as possible. www.theoldfarmhousebakery.co.uk
