Open Farm Sunday - June 12th
Jun 5, 2011
Do you care where your food comes from? Of course you do – and so do the farms that open their gates (don’t forget to close them behind you!) on Open Farm Sunday. It is a great day out and an opportunity to meet the farmers who produce your food and care for the countryside. Go to the Open Farm Sunday website to see a full list of participating farms.
One of our members, Challow Hill Farm, is taking part and will be open to the public from 10am - 4pm.
You will be able to go and see all the animals including calves, lambs, chicks and their new arrivals some spotty piglets. Other attractions on the day will include being able to watch their sheep being sheared, learn how to make sausages, watch a cookery demonstration, collect eggs as well as see a display of vintage and modern farm machinery and a big bale climb.
ENTRY TO THE FARM WILL BE FREE and there will be a range of refreshments available. Fresh meat and eggs will be for sale. For further information please contact Lucy 0789 9981551 or info@challowhillmeats.co.uk
Challow Hill Farm, near East Challow, has been farmed by the same family since 1919 with the 3rd, 4th and 5th generation currently working together. Lucy, Lin and John look after a variety of livestock on the 200 acre farm. A herd of pedigree Dexter cattle produce beef which is sold at 6 local farmers market, Wantage, Faringdon, Abingdon, Didcot and Newbury (twice monthly). Challow Hill Farm also sell eggs from their flock of free range hens at the markets. Pigs and sheep are kept to produce pork and lamb which is sold from the farm. their exciting new venture is that they now have on the farm new facilities to enable them to host educational and group visits to see a working farm and study the wildlife and historical features surrounding it so please either talk to them on the day or contact after the event to discuss a visit.
